Located at the mouth of Lake Michigan, Chicago has been a major port for thousands of years. It was once a French colony, with explorers, missionaries and traders interacting with the Pottawatomie Native Americans.
A trader named Jean Baptiste Point du Sable came here in 1770 and built a home at the river’s mouth. He and his wife were the first non-indigenous residents of what is now the city of Chicago.
The site was also considered a strategic location due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. In 1803 the United States established Fort Dearborn at the site, and in the 1820s the idea of building a canal was proposed to link the two lakes together.
As the new state of Illinois grew, the need for water to supply the growing settlements prompted a plan to build the Illinois and Mississippi Canal. The canal would provide access to the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan, as well as the Great Lakes.
Construction of the canal began in 1830, but was delayed when the Black Hawk War began. After the end of the war, the Indians ceded lands in northern Illinois to the new state, and the canal was opened.
Once the canal was completed, Chicago began to thrive as a trade center and became one of the most prosperous cities in the country. The influx of immigrants brought in new goods and services, a surge in the number of factories and stores, and an increase in the number of wealthy people living in the city.
The era of the great fires of 1871 and 1893 marked a period of severe urban decay, but the city rebuilt quickly and reached more than a half million people within a few years. In 1900 the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal was built, making it possible for larger vessels to pass through the city. The resulting improvements in public health had a dramatic effect on the city’s population. Click Through to the Following Web Page
Throughout the century, Chicago’s economy grew as a result of manufacturing and a strong financial sector, especially in the manufacturing of textiles and other products that were used to make goods for sale in the United States. The emergence of the auto industry also contributed to the city’s economic growth, along with the introduction of railroads and the construction of highways.
