Foundation Steps

As you know by now, the foundation steps of Salsa are the building blocks of the dance. Your ability to execute the steps with correct timing and technique is crucial to developing your salsa skills. In this class, we will add further movements which will open up more possibilities for your dancing.

It’s been said that the essence of salsa is in the footwork as opposed to the partner work. With this in mind will continue to explore weight shifting body movements an intricate put patterns which will challenge you and suppose you two different ways to use your body.

There is an art form to dancing with another person and to do so harmoniously allows your partner to respond to you effortlessly. We will continue to teach you to dance clearly and with confidence as lead and follow so you never miss a move and you learn how to communicate with your dance partner.

Meet Your Instructor

Del Dominguez - Mayambo
Del Dominguez

Del Dominguez is the founder and director of the Mayambo Dance Company/Studio. he has over 18 years of experience dancing, performing and choreographing Salsa.

He is one of the founding members of Chicago’s legendary Descarga Caribe dance company which was the city’s first Salsa on2 Dance Company. With Descarga, Del traveled the world performing alongside his mentor, the amazing Sekou McMiller, in such places as Puerto Rico, London, Tokyo, Beijing, Rome, Mexico and all across the United States.

He has also danced professionally as a competitive Ballroom dancer in the American Rhythm division and has over 6 years of experience teaching, coaching and competing.

Del is a 4 time Salsa champion and most notably co-founded/directed the Mixed Motion Art Dance Company which were first place winners in the small teams division at the Ultimate Latin Dance Challenge in Las Vegas.

Furthermore, he co-directed a theatrical piece for the prestigious Giordano Dance Company of Chicago which debuted at the Harris Theater to rave reviews from local press.

Del is currently invested in growing the Mayambo dance family and elevating his dance companies and the Chicago Salsa dance community as a whole.

What Safety Measure Are In Place During Class?

We’re constantly following the CDC guidelines for the appropriate measures to take during class. As of December 2021, mask wearing is mandatory regardless of vaccination status. We also provide ample amounts of hand sanitizer for our clients.

Do I Need A Partner?
No! You’re welcome to come to class and enjoy meeting new friends and dance partners at our studio. We do our best to make sure numbers are even and that you spend most of your time dancing and having fun!
What Kind Of Shoes Do I Wear
As long as you are comfortable and are wearing shoes that do not have a sticky bottom, you should be fine. We always recommend dance shoes, but street shoes with some give and appropriate as well.
What If I Miss A Class?
As a boutique studio, we offer a smaller amount of specialized classes. As such, we don’t have options to do a make up at the beginner level. We ask our students to plan ahead to make sure they can attend each class in the 4 week session. We do offer a credit for ONE CLASS if you happen to miss and we apply that to your next session by way of a custom coupon on your purchase.

At this time, we only allow 8 leads and 8 follows in every session. We do this ensure class balance and so that each student receives ample attention. Our main priority is helping students progress in their Salsa dancing development.
